Fishing in Persona 4 provides players with a relaxing break from dungeon crawling while offering valuable rewards for Social Links and quests. Securing your first fishing rod involves a multi-step sequence that connects several daily activities around Inaba. Mastering this prerequisite unlocks unique trading opportunities and key quest progression throughout the game.
Starting the Quest for the Fish Hook
To begin obtaining the river fishing rod, visit the Samegawa Flood Plain and speak with the old man standing near the riverbank. He explains that he wants to fish but is currently missing a proper hook. This initial dialogue sets off a small trading chain required to locate the missing tool.
Acquiring the required item first demands securing bait to trade. You can obtain a ladybug by trading a soda from the local vending machines with the boy located near the shrine. Alternatively, players further along in the story can catch bugs directly at the shrine during the day.
Visiting Shiroku Pub at Night
Once you have a bug in your inventory, head to the central shopping district after dark and enter the Shiroku Pub. Speak with the hostess inside and offer to feed her pet fish. In return for the bug, she retrieves a fish hook stuck inside the tank and hands it to you.
Make sure you also visit dungeons to obtain at least one gemstone drop, as this ensures smooth interactions with local shopkeepers. Returning to the old man at the riverbank with the hook completes the task. He rewards your effort by giving you the standard River Rod.
Unlocking the Sea Fishing Rod
After mastering river fishing, players can eventually expand their reach by targeting ocean catches at Shichiri Beach. Accessing this area requires taking long rides on your scooter three times to discover the coastal route. You must then catch the elusive River Guardian at the flood plain to impress the old fisherman.
Showing the River Guardian to the old man rewards you with the Sea Rod, allowing you to catch ocean species. Utilizing both rods is essential for completing late-game quests, especially those tied to the Hermit Social Link.
